Financial Model Templates for New and Innovative Businesses

I try to continually improve how I communicate the value of the financial models you will find on this site. One way to by finding ways to categorize the 100s of spreadsheets. Here, I'm going to focus on all the templates that were designed and/or can be utilized for new and innovative businesses. I consider a 'new' business something that didn't exist 10 years ago and I consider an 'old' business something that has been around for multiple decades. However, there could be models that represent a new or innovative method applied to an older business model, see below:

new and innovative business models

Tech:
  • FaaS (function-as-a-service) and DaaS (data-as-a-service) - Both of these businesses have to do with infrastructure and cloud computing, but they differ in how revenue is earned. FaaS is a compute service provider (execute functions for a fee) and DaaS is about selling valuable data through API calls and/or one-time payments. The concepts are very new and both fall into the SaaS templates bundle.
  • Property Management Businesses - You might think this is an older concept, but with the advent of software, most of these larger property managers are enterprise software companies that essentially deploy their software to owners and it handles all aspects of rent collecting. They might use SaaS platforms for property management to handle tenant communications, maintenance requests, rent payments, and financial reporting. Other aspects are handled offline such as regular maintenance and/or property security. Check out more real estate models here.
  • Online Education Courses - Online education is starting to take hold as the cost of college makes higher education out of reach for many. This is a viable way to gain very specific and valuable information that directly translates into earnings power, new jobs, and a wonderful life.
  • Automated AI Kiosks - This could go a bunch of different ways, but using AI mixed with kiosks could end up replacing much of the fast food industry over time.
Sustainability:
  • Biogas / Biomethane - This business model involves acquiring feedstock (manure, agricultural waste, food waste) and breaking it down into biomethane. It is an alternative to natural gas and this model has all the assumptions you need to plan out the opening of up to 5 facilities.
  • Wind Farm - Here you can scale up to 5 wind turbine farms. The model is pretty simple. You buy land and install the wind turbines. Revenue assumptions include selling the energy to the open market as well as power purchase agreements.
  • Hydroponics Farming - Growing crops indoors has become a cost-effective and viable way to run a business. There are pros and cons to growing your crops indoors vs outdoors, but this could be one new place where office space is used in, since nobody is going back to the office.
  • Recycling - This is not a new concept, but it can be applied in new ways as our planet increasingly needs to find more sustainable energy resources and reduce waste. Recycling is a great way to repurpose and reuse things.
